A Musical Journey through Time and Sound
Growing up in a family where music was a cherished tradition, Lionel's childhood was filled with guitars, banjos, pianos, and family sing-alongs. His father, a guitar-playing enthusiast, would serenade the family, creating cherished memories that would influence Lionel's musical path.
Inspired by iconic artists like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Leonard Cohen, Lionel found his truth in music, leading him to walk away from formal education in pursuit of a more authentic musical experience. His unconventional journey involved attending gigs, pestering seasoned musicians, and gradually earning their mentorship.
Lionel's transition into the music scene of the '60s and '70s Edmonton was characterized by a thriving local culture of creating one's own entertainment. The DIY spirit fostered the birth of institutions like CKUA, where Lionel has left an indelible mark as a radio host.
In an era without video games and limited technological distractions, musicians like Lionel honed their craft through intense live performances, playing up to six hours a night, six nights a week. This "earn while you learn" approach became a cornerstone of Lionel's musical foundation
Fast-forward to the present, Lionel reflects on the evolving landscape of the music industry. The advent of technology and the proliferation of entertainment options have reshaped the dynamics for musicians. The intimacy of live performances, once omnipresent in every corner of the city, is now challenged by the allure of virtual experiences.
Amidst this shifting landscape, Lionel finds solace and continuity in places like the Commodore. For him, this iconic venue represents more than just a stage; it embodies a connection to the past, a testament to enduring authenticity in an ever-changing world.
As Lionel continues to make music and share his insights on CKUA, he remains a living bridge between the nostalgic allure of yesteryears and the dynamic challenges of the modern musical landscape. His commitment to authenticity, his rich musical history, and his warm embrace of the ever-changing world make Lionel Rault a cherished figure in the Canadian music scene.
